I met Sarah Gaither nine years ago in Texas, where she was my roommate for a week. Since then, we have generally lived at least 1200 miles away from each other, but we see each other every year. We survived the Honor Academy together. We’ve traveled to India. We dropped everything for a spur of the moment road trip from east Texas to Nashville. She’s driven me to Canada. Twice. She slept on my bedroom floor the night before my wedding. I met up with her in Alaska where she shaved my head (which my husband actually predicted would happen). We participated in setting the world record for egg toss participants. I chopped off at least sixteen inches of her hair using craft scissors. We found a way to eat barley-based meals for a week straight: I think we tried to steam barley once and accidentally made enough for six vegan fests. She even passed through town for a good luck visit the day before I ended up going into labor. Was it her presence that encouraged my little one to arrive two weeks early? It’s possible.
It should be noted that Sarah has done many more crazy things than this list (I guess I have, too), but I feel privileged to have partaken in a few of her adventures.
