Social interaction. I might do well in person or on the surface of a social networking site (though I might over-extrovert to compensate for my discomfort). But then I go home and analyze. I ruminate over the words spoken and gestures made. Did I say what I meant? Did I miss any subtle social cues? Did I come across the way I want to be perceived? Did that one frown mean she’s mad at me? What did I do wrong? When my feelings are hurt, do I bring it up, or would I lose the friendship? Am I just overreacting? How can I sleep until this is resolved? I generally am just miffed that people like me at all. And for a long time I thought it had something to do with acting “perfect” around others, but if I misstepped, it was all over, no second chances. I have worked hard to get over myself, but I’ve had a long way to come and a long way still to go. I’m so grateful that I now have several friends with whom I can be myself and spend relaxing, quality time without stressing about losing them forever in a misunderstanding. It’s been a long time coming. But even as I write this post, I’m thinking about whether I want to admit any of this and if I’ll be questioned later or if this insecurity of mine will be running through your mind when we speak next . . . .
